Webflow handles a lot of SEO groundwork automatically — fast CDN, clean HTML, SSL, automatic sitemaps. But there are five specific things that consistently make the difference between a Webflow site that ranks and one that doesn’t.
Tip 1: Optimise your title tags and meta descriptions
Title tags are the single most important on-page SEO element. In Webflow, set these per page in Page settings → SEO, or dynamically via CMS fields on Collection pages. Keep title tags under 60 characters and lead with the primary keyword. Meta descriptions should be 120–155 characters — write them for humans, not search engines, but include your keyword naturally.
Tip 2: Add alt text to every image
Alt text helps search engines understand your images and is essential for accessibility. In Webflow, add alt text in the image settings panel. If an image is purely decorative, click “Decorative” to mark it as such — this tells screen readers to skip it and keeps your accessibility audit clean. Webflow’s Audit panel (shortcut: U in the Designer) flags missing alt text automatically.
Tip 3: Use keywords in your URL slugs
Keep URL slugs short, lowercase, and keyword-focused. Webflow auto-generates slugs from page titles — always review and clean them up before publishing. A slug like /webflow-web-design is cleaner and more useful than a long string of words. If you update a slug after publishing, add a 301 redirect in Site Settings → Hosting → Redirects.
Tip 4: Use a consistent heading hierarchy
Every page should have exactly one H1 — the main topic of the page. Use H2s for main sections and H3s for subsections. Don’t skip levels, and don’t use heading tags for visual styling. In Webflow, the Audit panel flags heading hierarchy issues so you can catch them before publishing.
Tip 5: Connect Google Search Console and submit your sitemap
Webflow automatically generates a sitemap at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml. Verify your site in Google Search Console and submit the sitemap from the Coverage section. This tells Google to actively crawl and index your pages rather than waiting for it to discover them on its own. Also connect GA4 via Site Settings → Custom Code for traffic tracking.
